SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sophomore left-hander Brian Matusz takes home first-team All-America honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. This marks Matusz's inaugural first-team All-American honors, having been selected second team All-American by Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, and Rivals.com.
Matusz, a Team USA member and quarterfinalist for the Wallace Award, finished the season with an overall record of 10-3 and an ERA of 2.85. Matusz set a new single-season strikeout record of 163. The Cave Creek, Ariz., native also placed himself second in single-game strikeouts with a career-high 13, a feet he has achieved three times this past season. Matusz is also a member of Team USA and was an All-WCC first-team honoree.
Matusz has one complete game on the season, a two-run seven hit gem he tossed against Saint Mary's. In that game, Matusz registered 10 strikeouts, one of nine games this season he recorded double-digit strikeouts. In his second outing of the season, Matusz helped lead USD to its fourth consecutive win over the Texas Longhorns as he allowed one run on five hits, while striking out eight in 5.2 innings of work.
