Cousins' Performance Tops Latest USF Minor League Report

A big night for former Dons outfielder Scott Cousins leads the latest report of USF alumni in minor league baseball. On August 22 against the Hickory Crawdads, Cousins, an outfielder for the Class A Greensboro Grasshoppers of the Florida Marlins organization, went 3-for-4 with three homeruns and nine RBI.

Four days later, Cousins went 2-for-3 with a homerun and three RBI versus the Lexington Legends. Over his last ten games, Cousins is hitting .351 with four homeruns and 17 RBI. Cousins' season numbers include a .289 average with 18 homeruns and 73 RBI.

Also making noise over their last ten were pitcher Nick Pereira, outfielder Stefan Gartrell and first basemen Taggert Bozied.

Pitching for the Class AA Connecticut Defenders, a San Francisco Giants affiliate, Pereira has gone 5-1 with a 2.72 ERA and 62 strikeouts. Since starting July 6 at Harrisburg, he has struck out nine in a game once, eight in a game four times. For the year, Pereira is 8-9 with a 3.47 ERA and has accumulated 120 strikeouts.

Gartrell made another move up the ranks of the Chicago White Sox organization, going from the Class A Kannapolis Intimidators to the Class A Advanced Winston-Salem Warthogs. In 14 games with the Warthogs, Gartrell has hit .308, produced 11 runs, hit two homeruns and collected six RBI. Playing a total of 109 games this season for both clubs, Gartrell has a .302 average, 14 homeruns and 63 RBI.

With the Class AAA Memphis Redbirds of the St. Louis Cardinal organization, Bozied has a .282 average in the last 10 with one homerun and eight RBI. On August 22 against Albany, he was 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI. He's hitting .268 in 2007 having connected on 24 homeruns and batted in 80 runs.

As of August 30, USF has eleven alumni active on minor league baseball rosters.
