Rich Hill Receives Multi-Year Contract Extension

Sept. 6, 2007

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego Executive Director of Athletics, Ky Snyder, has announced that head baseball coach Rich Hill has received a multi-year contract extension.

`We are very excited to secure a contract extension for Rich Hill," stated Snyder. "Rich embodies the spirit and values of the University. He has developed one of the top baseball programs in the country and we look forward to continued success."

Hill, who just wrapped up his ninth-year at USD, has built the Toreros baseball program into one of the best in the country. This past season, Hill directed USD to its best Division I season in program history with a 43-18 overall record, as well as guiding the Toreros to a program-best No. 4 national ranking. USD also received its first national seed in the NCAA post season, No.8, the first-ever WCC team to receive a national seed heading into the NCAA Regionals this past season.

Under Hill's tutelage this past season, the Toreros produced the WCC Player of the Year, Shane Buschini; three All-Americans in Brian Matusz, Josh Romanski and Buschini; one Freshman All-American in AJ Griffin; and two Team USA members in Romanski and Matusz. The Toreros not only captured the WCC Championship on 2007, but had eight first-team All-WCC selections and two All-WCC honorable mentions. For his efforts this past season, Hill was recognized by his peers as the 2007 West Coast Conference Coach of the Year.

"I am extremely thankful and grateful to Ky Snyder and Dr. Lyons for providing my family and I the opportunity to be part of the Torero family and to build on the success we have had over the past nine years," stated Hill. "The leadership and vision that our administration has shown is phenomenal and is evident by the momentum and helium that we have in our program right now"

During his tenure at USD, Hill has amassed an overall record of 309-219-3 and he has moved his overall coaching record to 642-439-3 in 19 years as a head coach. Hill has guided the Toreros to back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances (2006-2007) and all four of USD's NCAA Regional Division I appearances. Hill has also guided the Toreros to back-to-back WCC titles in 2003 and 2004 and was tabbed as the WCC Coach of the year in 2004.

With the recruiting class that has just arrived on campus, rated No. 6 in the nation by StudentSportsBaseball.com, the Toreros have been tabbed by Rivals.com as the No. 3 "Rising Program" in the country. USD will welcome back one of the nation's top pitching rotations in National Player of the Year Candidate Brian Matusz, All-American Josh Romanski, freshman All-American AJ Griffin and first-team All-WCC honoree Matt Couch. These talented returning pitchers combined with highly touted and fifth-round draft pick Kyle Blair, along with MLB draftee Sammy Solis, USD's pitching rotation will be second to none in the country.
