Sept. 27, 2007
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco head baseball coach Nino Giarratano officially announced the 2008 schedule Wednesday. The Dons are in line to play 18 games versus teams who made a NCAA Regional appearance over the past two seasons including UC Irvine which made the trip to Omaha a season ago.
In a non-conference schedule primed to give USF an opportunity to find their road back to the NCAA Tournament, a path they trod in 2006, the Dons will face 2007 College World Series participant UC Irvine, 2007 Regional team Fresno State and Hawaii and Houston, who were at 2006 Regionals. In the West Coast Conference, San Diego and Pepperdine are returning regional representatives.
"We are looking at a solid non-conference schedule," Giarratano said. "We're playing in some great venues in order for our players to get experience and test their skills. From an RPI stand point, we believe if we play well we'll have an opportunity to go to the postseason.
San Diego is returning one of the league's top teams along with Pepperdine. Overall, the WCC just keeps getting better. I see two to three teams having a shot at regionals."
To open the year, USF will play at Hawaii, February 22 - 24 and travel to UC Irvine for a three-game set from February 29-March 2. USF will be in Houston from March 14 to March 16 and take on Fresno State on March 18 and April 30 at home, April 22 on the road.
Other highlights in the non-conference season include the home opener versus San Jose State on March 4, a three-game series at UNLV from March 7-9, the third annual Dante Benedetti Classic held at AT&T Park, the home of the San Francisco Giants, on April 1 versus Cal, and a regular season-ending series versus Dallas Baptist, who have a winning record in 29 consecutive seasons.
Conference play opens on February 28 with the Dons playing at a three-game series at Saint Mary's. USF's conference home opener takes place on April 2 versus the Loyola Marymount Lions. The Diamond Dons take on 2007 WCC Regional reps Pepperdine on the road from April 18-20 and San Diego at Benedetti Diamond from May 9-11.
The WCC Championship will take place from May 23 to May 25 at the home for the regular season champions.
