Moraga, CA- Saint Mary's head baseball coach Jedd Soto announced the commitment of seven student-athletes during the NCAA early signing period for the 2008 season. The class is comprised of seven high school players from California. The crop of seven is highly ranked by numerous publications and is headlined by some great arms.
Saint Mary's secured commitments from six players from Northern California and one from San Diego, CA. Under the direction of Soto and his assistants, the SMC coaching staff assembled the class with six pitchers (5 RHP, 1 LHP) and one infielder with many of the arms able to make a contribution at the plate as well.
"We are excited with the quality of class that signed with us," Soto said. "We expect this class to help take us to the next level. Six of the players have played together already which will help with the transition and maturation at the college level."
Saint Mary's six Northern California players include Daniel Alcaire SS/RHP (Salesian High School), Justin Kuks RHP (West High School), Taylor Reid RHP (De La Salle High School), Alex Schmarzo RHP (Palo Alto High School), David Small LHP (Benicia High School) and Kyle Tachibana RHP/INF (Los Altos High School).
"Our focus was to retain as much local talent as we could," said Soto. "It is important to our program to give these student-athletes a chance to play in front of their family and friends."
The lone Southern California signee is Dorsey Ek RHP/INF from Francis Parker High School in San Diego, CA.
Daniel Alcaire - SS/RHP (5-10, 170) will come to Saint Mary's from Salesian High School where he led his team to a 14-11 record for head coach Mark Castillo. Alcaire has been ranked No. 16 in Northern California and No. 35 in the State by Perfect Game. Nationally Alcaire is ranked 173 by Baseball America. At Salesian, Alcaire has been a three-year letterwinner through his junior season where he batted .476 with five doubles and 17 RBIs. On the mound, Alcaire posted a 3.10 ERA and fanned 68 batters in 41 innings. For his efforts he was named First-Team All-BSAL and Pitcher of the Year at Salesian.
Dorsey Ek - RHP/INF (6-7, 210) will head to Moraga from Francis Parker High School in San Diego, CA. Ek led Francis Parker to a Coastal League Championship this past season and his freshman season. In his freshman season, Francis Parker secured a CIF State Championship. Ek is ranked No. 33 in Southern California and No. 56 in the State by Perfect Game. Last season Ek tallied 50 Ks in 70 innings and posted a 1.58 ERA. At the plate, Ek recorded 24 RBIs. For his efforts, Ek garnered First-Team All-League accolades along with All-CIF honors. On top of his prowess on the field, Ek was named the Union Tribune Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Justin Kuks - RHP (6-2, 180) is set to join Saint Mary's from West High School in Tracy, CA. Kuks struck out 33 batters in 20 innings and posted a 2.70 ERA for head coach Steve Anastasio. Kuks threw a no-hitter last season, walking one while striking out eight. Kuks is ranked No. 254 by Baseball America as one of the top recruits in the nation and No. 28 in Northern California by Perfect Game. Kuks also showcases his talents for Nor-Cal Baseball where he has captured numerous championships. Kuks was also invited to play for former Saint Mary's head coach Tom Wheeler and the Cincinnati Reds Scout Team.
Taylor Reid - RHP (6-3, 185) will stay local as he comes from De La Salle High School in Concord, CA. Reid helped the No. 20-ranked Spartans to a 21-6 record for head coach Eric Borba. Reid was superb from the hill, posting a 6-1 record with a 1.78 ERA. Reid fanned 47 in 51 inning pitched. Reid is currently ranked No. 17 in Northern California and No. 36 in the State by Perfect Game. Reid showcased his stuff in a four-hit victory against Pittsburgh where he allowed one run and struck out eight. Reid is also a member of Nor-Cal Baseball where he plays for Rob Bruno and Tony Crivello. Reid started in the Area Code Games held in Long Beach this past summer.
Alex Schmarzo - RHP (6-4, 190) will head to the Moraga hills from Palo Alto High School where he showcases his talents for head coach Joel Kaufman. Schmarzo posted a 1.78 ERA last season and came up big against De-Anza division rival Wilcox where tossed a three-hit shutout with five Ks. Schmarzo earned SCVAL All-League Second-Team honors last season and was an honorable mention selection in 2005. Schmarzo is ranked No. 252 by Baseball America and No. 23 in Northern California and No. 57 in the State by Perfect Game. Schmarzo has honed his pitching for Nor-Cal coaches Rob Bruno and Tony Crivello. Schmarzo also worked exclusively for pitching coach Tom House in San Diego.
David Small - LHP (6-5, 195) will come to Saint Mary's from Benicia High School where he helped lead Benicia to a 19-6 record including a Solano County League title for coach Jim Bowles. Small finished his junior season 6-1 on the hill with a 1.68 ERA and 61 Ks in 45 innings. For his efforts, Small was named league MVP as well as All-Region along with The Times Herald Player of the Year. Small showcased his stuff against Fairfield High School where he struck out 12 and gave up four hits and two earned in a complete game. Small is ranked as the No. 199 pitcher in the Nation by PG Crosschecker and the No. 162 player by Baseball America. Small is also ranked No. 39 in the State by Perfect Game and is also a key figure for Nor-Cal Baseball.
Kyle Tachibana - RHP/INF (5-11, 165) will head to Saint Mary's from Los Altos High School where he led his team to a 14-7 overall record and a 12-2 conference mark. Tachibana has been a two-way player for Los Altos, playing in the middle infield and on the mound. Tachibana has been recognized as one of the top pitcher/infielder prospects by Team One Baseball. In addition to on the field, Tachibana has excelled in the classroom, garnering academic honors in all three years.
The Gaels will open their 2007 campaign on Tuesday, January 30 against Fresno Pacific. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Louis Guisto Field.
