Lions Sign Five Standouts

Nov. 24, 2006

LOS ANGELES - LMU baseball added five California standouts during November's early signing period, Recruiting Coordinator Benny Bonilla announced. The five signed National Letters of Intent to join the Lions in the fall of 2007.

"We are excited about this class," Bonilla said. "It's a strong class that includes some definite blue-chippers who will bring a physical dimension to the team."

David Freitas will join the Crimson and Navy after completing his standout career at Elk Grove High School. There, the 6-2 Freitas earned first-team All-Delta League honors and was the Offensive Player of the Year as a junior. Freitas, who the Lions can use as a catcher, corner infielder, or right-handed closer, was selected to the 2006 Brewers Area Code squad. He is the son of Cheryl Hogge.

Andrew Irvine hails from Great Oak High School, where he was the team MVP as a junior and the Offensive Player of the Year as a sophomore. Irvine also earned first-team All-CIF and De Anza League honors in 2006. A 6-0 third baseman/outfielder, he was the De Anza League Player of the Year. Irvine is the son of Tracy Irvine.

Matt Koch will be the second in his family to don the Lions' uniform, as he is the younger brother of Brady Koch, who played for the Lions from 2001-2004 and is a current member of the LMU coaching staff. Also a catcher, the 6-1 Matt Koch led his Mira Costa High School team with a .433 average and a .527 on-base percentage as a junior. He added a team-leading 37 RBI and six home runs in 2006. Koch is the son of Kathy and Ron Koch.

Joe Vierra, a 6-2 third baseman/outfielder, helped Quartz Hill High School to the 2006 CIF Championship. He will join the Lions next fall after putting up big numbers as a junior, hitting .382 with an on-base percentage of .515 in 2006. Vierra is the son of Joy and David Vierra.

Martin Viramontes will join the Lions from Bullard High School, where he earned first-team All-CIF and All-Metro League selections as a junior right-handed pitcher. Also receiving scholar-athlete honors, the 6-5 Viramontes joined Freitas as teammates on the Brewers Area Code squad. He is the son of Theresa and Martin Viramontes.

LMU's 2007 Opening Day is just around the corner, as the Lions will host Sacramento State for the three-game opening series beginning Friday, February 2nd.
