The WCC has announced its first men's baseball game of the 2009 season to be broadcasted on national television on ESPNU. The game will be be between San Diego and Santa Clara, and will take place on Sunday, April 5th at Stephen Schott Stadium in Santa Clara. Santa Clara has the overall series advantage at 50-44 and won the series last year, 2-1.
The Toreros are coming off a successful season, 44-17, in which they won the 2008 WCC Championship Series title for the second straight year, and made it to the championship game of the Long Beach regional, falling to eventual College World Series champion, Fresno State. San Diego will return five position starters, five starting pitchers, and 17 overall letterwinners. Headlining the group of returners are 2009 NCBWA pre-season All-American, junior RHP A.J. Griffin and 2008 All-WCC first team selection, junior OF James Meador. Other notable returners are sophomores Kyle Blair (RHP) and Sammy Solis (LHP), both member's of last year's All-Freshman team.
The Broncos are coming off a 33-22 season last year, in which they led the league in batting average (.325) and homeruns (60). Headlining the list of returners is 2008 Freshman of the Year, RHP Thain Simon. The Broncos also return a number of players from last year's All-WCC first team in senior 2B Brady Fuerst, sophomore RHP Nate Garcia, junior SS Jon Karcich, and junior C Tommy Medica.
In 2008, WCC teams posted an outstanding 156-107-1 (.593) overall record against teams from other conferences, including a 99-87-1 (.532) against teams from the Big West, Mountain West, Pac-10, and Western Athletic Conference.
