Cal State Bakersfield - 80
San Diego - 72
San Diego, CA - The USD Toreros, playing without leading scorer Brandon Johnson (deep thigh contusion), suffered an 80-72 setback tonight by the Cal State University Roadrunners at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. CSUB, which was coming off a 34-point victory over Loyola Marymount this past Monday, made 10-of-19 three-pointers and had four players in double figures. USD was paced by junior center Gyno Pomare with 18 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. The Toreros also received new personal bests from Rob Jones (18 points, 9 rebounds) and De'Jon Jackson (17 points). USD will try to get back to their winning ways this Saturday when they open up WCC play against the USF Dons in a 6 pm contest.
The Toreros didn't help their cause in the first half with 15 turnovers as they fell behind at intermission, 41-35. In the 2nd half, the Roadrunners extended their lead to 9 points at 50-41 with 15:21 to go. USD's Rob Jones scored three buckets over the next three minutes to pull the Toreros to within 1 point at 50-49. CSUB's Zack Grasmick answered with a trey, and the Toreros would get to within one at 57-56 on a Devin Ginty three-pointer with 7:46 left. From there USD would not be able to get over the hump and the Roadrunners made the plays and shots down the stretch to earn the 8-point victory.
USD falls to 7-10 overall while the Roadrunners improve to 5-12. CSUB was paced by Donavan Bragg (20 points), Terrance Johns (18) and Demarcus Hall (16 points, 8 rebounds). Looking ahead to Saturday's WCC opener, Brandon Johnson's status is uncertain.
