Torero Defense Shuts Down Point Loma 74-51

San Diego, CA - The USD men's basketball team improved to 2-1 on the season with tonight's convincing 74-51 victory over the 11th-ranked NAIA Point Loma Nazarene Sea Lions. USD's tenacious defense put the clamps on PLNU in the first half in taking a 44-19 intermission lead, and junior center Gyno Pomare led the way with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Theo White came off the bench to chip in with 10 points and 9 rebounds as the Toreros built their lead to as many as 35 points in the 2nd half before cruising to their 74-51 win. USD will now begin a four-game stretch on the road beginning with Loyola-Chicago on Monday evening.

Seven minutes into the game it was a four-point contest with USD holding a 13-9 advantage. From there the Toreros went on an 18-0 run to forge ahead 31-9 with 5:18 left in the half, and the Toreros were in control the rest of the way. Every Torero played this evening except for senior Nir Cohen who broke his left hand during the team's afternoon shoot-around. He is out indefinitely. Brandon Johnson and Chris Lewis each chipped in with 9 points each, and Danny Brown and Ross DeRogatis added 7 apiece.

For the game USD shot 44.3 percent from the field (27-61) and outrebounded the Sea Lions, 54-42. PLNU, which was paced by guard Josh Sanderson with 15 points, struggled from the field in the shooting department, finishing at just 27.3% (18-66). They managed to convert just 5 of 25 three-point attempts.
