San Diego - 81
Campbell - 69
San Diego, CA - The USD Toreros (7-4) won their fifth straight game with tonight's 81-69 home win over the visiting Campbell Fighting Camels (3-4). Senior guard Ross DeRogatis scored 20 of his game-high 27 points in the first half as USD held a 50-40 halftime advantage. Gyno Pomare came off the bench to contribute 18 points and 9 rebounds, while Theo White (13 rebounds) and Brandon Johnson (10 assists) also reached double digits in key areas. Campbell's Eric Smith led four teammates in double figures with 13 points. USD returns to the JCP this Saturday when they face Furman (5-4) in a 4:05 p.m. contest.
"We played well enough to win," said head coach Brad Holland. "Our 2nd half defense was better than the first, and that was the difference. Campbell is a scrappy team that makes you play differently. Theo White continues to rebound so well, and DeJon came up with 7 rebounds. That was important."
Campbell jumped out to a 7-2 early lead, but DeRogatis nailed his first trey and Daniel Fleming hit back-to-back baskets. USD would go up by as many as 12 at 43-31 with 3:42 to go before settling for the 50-40 intermission lead. USD shot 60.6% from the field and made 9-16 threes in the first half, but their 13 turnovers prevented them from pulling away. Campbell's Jonathan Rodriguez tallied 10 first half points, but was held scoreless in the 2nd half.
In the 2nd half Campbell scored the first 5 points on a layup by Reggie Bishop and three by Stephon Griffin to pull to within 50-45, but USD's DeJon Jackson scored on a layup and USD would go on to control the game the rest of the way. Besides his career-best 13 rebounds, Theo White also scored 6 points and totaled 5 steals. For the game USD shot 46.8% from the field (29-62) to Campbell's 41.1% (23-56). The Toreros finished with 11 made threes on 21 attempts; Campbell was just 6-for-23. USD owned the boards, 42-33.
