West Coast Conference Suspends Three Basketball Officials

Jan. 2, 2009

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The West Coast Conference announced today the suspension of three officials for permitting illegal substitutions in the final seconds of Tuesday night's men's basketball game between Santa Clara and UTEP.

The officiating crew permitted both the Broncos and Miners to make substitutions following an inadvertent whistle with 2.3 seconds left in overtime, which should not have been permitted per NCAA Rule 3, Section 4, Article 6 that forbids substitutions because of timing mistakes or inadvertent whistles in the final 59.9 seconds of regulation or overtime.

"Our review of the video focused on the final moments of overtime," WCC Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich said. "Our focus quickly became that substitutions were permitted by the officials at a critical time in the game when the rule book clearly lays out that they should not be permitted. We take the interpretation of the rule book, and our evaluation program very seriously, and will continue to do so in all of our sports."

The three members of the crew will be suspended for their first assignment during conference play, which begins on Friday, January 8.
