Pomare And Simpson Named WCC Co-Players Of The Week

Jan. 16, 2007

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - A pair of standout sophomore forwards share this week's WCC Player of the Week award. Diamon Simpson from Saint Mary's College and Gyno Pomare from the University of San Diego each posted impressive numbers in leading their respective teams to undefeated records last week.

Pomare guided the Toreros to a 3-0 record, including conference road wins at Pepperdine and at Loyola Marymount. The 6-7 forward from Oceanside, CA started the week with a career-high 22 points to go along with 13 rebounds in the Toreros' 78-62 win over UC Riverside. Pomare continued his hot play, matching his career-high with 22 points, while pulling down a career-high 15 rebounds in USD's 71-67 win at Pepperdine. He followed that performance with a 19-point, eight rebound effort in San Diego's 79-74 win at Loyola Marymount. For the week, Pomare averaged 21.0 ppg to go along with 12.0 rpg, while shooting 58.1 percent from the field and 86.7 percent from the free throw line.

Simpson was equally as impressive, leading the Gaels to wins over Portland and Gonzaga. Simpson did a little bit of everything in the Gaels' 73-57 win over Portland, scoring six points, grabbing six rebounds, blocking two shots and collecting two steals. The 6-7 forward then exploded in SMC's 80-75 win over Gonzaga, dropping in a career-high 29 points, to go along with 11 boards and two blocks. The Hayward, CA native averaged 17.5 ppg to go along with 8.5 rpg and 2.0 bpg. Simpson connected on a blistering 69.2 percent of his attempts from the field for the week.

San Diego's Gyno Pomare averaged 21.0 ppg and 12.0 rpg in three USD wins last week.

The weekly honor is the first of Pomare's career, while it is the second of Simpson's career, having earned the award earlier this season. Pomare and Simpson were both named to the All-WCC freshman team last season and are both enjoying solid sophomore campaigns. Both are ranked in the top 10 in the WCC in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, and blocks.
