SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- The West Coast Conference opens the fifth week of the league schedule starting Thursday, January 23, 2014. The fourth week kicked off with each of the four road teams collecting victories on Thursday. Visiting teams went 6-3 overall. No. 21 Gonzaga maintains its spot on the top of the league standings at 6-1, followed by BYU (5-2) and Saint Mary’s (4-2) in WCC play. The Conference continues to stake its reputation as one of the nation’s elite offensive conferences. See below for more notes on the WCC’s strengths.

WCC QUICK HITS

  • Through January 19, WCC teams boast a strong 67.5 winning percentage (83-40) vs. non-conference foes. See page 2 for the complete non-conference breakdown.
  • WCC Teams can really shoot and score the basketball. The Conference ranks third among Division I leaders in scoring (76.19), second in field goal percentage (46.38) and leads the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (37.45).
  • Gonzaga’s Sam Dower Jr. is the WCC Player of the Week. Dower averaged 23 points and 11 rebounds as Gonzaga swept Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount on the road. RELEASE .
  • Loyola Marymount’s Anthony Ireland ranks third among NCAA active career scoring leaders with 1,944 points.
  • The WCC ranks ninth nationally in conference RPI in front of the Mountain West (10) and Missouri Valley (11).
  • BYU’s Tyler Haws and Gonzaga’s Kevin Pangos were selected to the Naismith Trophy Early Season Top-50 Watch List. It is the second straight season on the list for Pangos.
  • Three WCC teams rank among the top-60 in RPI - Gonzaga (26), BYU (49) and Saint Mary’s (56).
  • Three WCC member institutions are rated in the KenPom top-60 – Gonzaga (19), BYU (49) and Saint Mary’s (53).
  • Three WCC players have been named to prestigious preseason watch lists. The Wooden Preseason Top-50 list features BYU’s Tyler Haws and Gonzaga’s Kevin Pangos. The Bob Cousy Award Watch List lists Pangos and Loyola Marymount’s Anthony Ireland.
  • Five member institutions posted a perfect Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in the most recent cohort as released by the NCAA in October.

WCC AMONG NATIONAL STATISTICAL LEADERS
Entering Monday, January 21...

  • No. 21 Gonzaga ranks second among Division I in field goal percentage (51.3),and leads the country in 3-point field goal percentage (42.5), ranks 22nd in scoring (81.6), 25th in total 3-pointers (153), and 16th in scoring margin (14.6).
  • BYU rates fourth nationally in scoring (87.3 ppg), 17th in the nation in assist/turnover ratio (1.51), 12th in assists per game (17.1), second in total assists (341), second in free throw attempts (608), and made free throws (419) and first in total rebounds (849).
  • Three WCC schools are in the top-25 in total assists: BYU (2nd/341), San Francisco (19th/298) and Portland (23rd/293).
  • Pacific rates fifth nationally among Division I leaders in free throw percentage (77.1), Loyola Marymount  is 13th (75.6), while Portland is 25th (74.8) at the stripe.
  • Saint Mary’s is fifth in 3-point percentage (42.3), 22nd in free throws (362) and 24th in free throw attempts (505) 
  • Santa Clara is 15th in 3-pointers (161) and 24th in 3-point attempts (425).
  • Two WCC student-athletes rank in the top-20 nationally in field goal percentage: Sam Dower, Jr. (eighth/61.5) of Gonzaga and Brad Waldow (13th/60.4) of Saint Mary’s
  • BYU’s Tyler Haws ranks seventh nationally in scoring (22.2)
