SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Saint Mary's sophomore forward Diamon Simpson collected his second consecutive West Coast Conference Player of the Week honor, and the third in the last four weeks, after guiding the Gaels to road wins at San Francisco and at San Diego. The two wins improved the Gaels to 4-1 in conference play and pushed them into a three-way tie with Gonzaga and Santa Clara for first place in the WCC standings.
Simpson started the week by tossing in 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field in the Gaels' 71-64 overtime win at Bay Area rival San Francisco on Saturday. The 6-7 forward also chipped in four rebounds and three assists in the win over the Dons. The Hayward, CA native followed up that performance with a team-high 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field in SMC's 85-78 win at San Diego on Monday. Simpson also hauled down five rebounds and blocked four shots in the win over the Toreros.
For the week, Simpson averaged 18.0 points per game on 58.3 percent (14-for-24) shooting from the floor. He also displayed an all-around game, averaging 4.5 rebounds per game, 2.5 assists per game, and 2.5 blocks per game. During WCC play, Simpson is one of just two players in the league to rank in the top 10 in scoring (6th-16.2 ppg), rebounding (6th-7.2 rpg), field goal percentage (53.2), and blocks (4th-1.80 bpg).
The weekly honor is the third of Simpson's career with all three distinctions coming this season.
