SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- The West Coast Conference continues to roll into February with more key matchups on the docket for week seven, starting Wednesday, Feb. 5. No. 23/20 Gonzaga maintains its spot on the top of the league standings at 10-1, followed by BYU (7-4) and San Francisco (7-4) in WCC play. The Conference continues to stake its reputation as one of the nation’s elite offensive conferences. See below for more notes on the WCC’s strengths.

WCC QUICK HITS

  • Through Feb. 3, WCC teams boast a strong 67.5 winning percentage (83-40) vs. non-conference foes. See page 2 for the complete non-conference breakdown.
  • BYU’s Tyler Haws is the WCC Player of the Week. The junior guard averaged 35.5 points per game in wins against Pacific and Saint Mary’s. RELEASE .
  • WCC Teams can really shoot and score the basketball. The Conference ranks third among Division I leaders in scoring (75.77)and in field goal percentage (46.11) and leads the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (37.40).
  • Loyola Marymount’s Anthony Ireland ranks fourth among NCAA active career scoring leaders with 2,009 points. Ireland is the only active Division I player with 2,000 points and 500 assists.
  • The WCC ranks ninth nationally in conference RPI in front of the Mountain West (10) and the Missouri Valley (11). 
  • BYU’s Tyler Haws ranks third nationally in scoring (24.6) and his 48 points at Portland (1/23/14) were the most by a WCC player since LMU’s Hank Gathers scored 50 in 1990.
  • Three WCC teams rank among the top-60 in RPI - Gonzaga (21), BYU (45) and Saint Mary’s (58). 
  • Two WCC member institutions are rated in the KenPom top-50 – Gonzaga (26) and BYU (50). Saint Mary’s (70) is in the top-75.
  • Three WCC players have been named to prestigious preseason watch lists. The Wooden Preseason Top-50 list and the the Naismith Trophy Early Season Top-50 Watch List features BYU’s Tyler Haws and Gonzaga’s Kevin Pangos. The Bob Cousy Award Watch List lists Pangos and Loyola Marymount’s Anthony Ireland.
  • Five member institutions posted a perfect Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in the most recent cohort as released by the NCAA.

MORE WCC BULLETS

  • Loyola Marymount’s Anthony Ireland became the eighth WCC player (fifth Lion) to surpass 2,000 career points and enters this week with 2,009.
  • The last WCC player to reach 2,000 was Santa Clara’s Kevin Foster (2008-13), who scored 2,423 (second all-time).
  • BYU’s Tyler Haws scored a career-high 48 points in a triple overtime game at Portland (1/23/14), the most by a WCC player since Hank Gathers scored 50 against San Francisco (2/4/90).

WCC PLACES FOUR ON DISTRICT 8 ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM
West Coast Conference men’s basketball student-athletes dominated the 2014 Capital One District All-Academic First Team as announced by CoSIDA. Of the six-member District 8 first team, four compete in the WCC: Johnny Dee (San Diego), Malte Kramer (Pepperdine), Beau Levesque (Saint Mary’s) and Thomas van der Mars (Portland). COMPLETE RELEASE
