Two WCC Players Earn Freshmen All-American Honor

March 9, 2006

Saint Mary's freshman forward Diamon Simpson and San Diego freshman guard Brandon Johnson were named to Collegeinsider.com's Freshmen All-America team. Simpson and Johnson were just two of 25 players from all 334 Division I men's basketball programs to be recognized on the All-Freshman Team.

Simpson, who averaged 8.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game as a freshman, led the Gaels in rebounds, and was third on the team in scoring. Simpson collected 201 rebounds in his first season and had 86 offensive rebounds for the Gaels and was the WCC's fourth leading rebounder this season. He finished the year with back-to-back double-doubles in the WCC Tournament. Simpson had a career-high 20 points and 12 rebounds in the quarterfinal game against Santa Clara then had 12 points and 11 boards against Loyola Marymount in the semifinals.

Johnson turned in a stellar performance at the recently completed West Coast Conference Tournament, totaling 24 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals in the team's 85-72 first-round win over the Pepperdine Waves. In the team's 96-92 overtime loss to eventual champion Gonzaga in the semi-finals, Johnson chipped in with 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. For the season Johnson, who was also named to the five-man WCC All-Freshman team along Simpson, averaged 9.3 points per game and a team-best 4.07 assists.
