WCC Men's Basketball Notes - Gonzaga Advances to Sweet-16

  • No. 2 Gonzaga marched to its sixth Sweet-16 trip with a round of 32 victory against Iowa. The Bulldogs advanced to the second round for the seventh straight year with a second round win vs. North Dakota State - the second longest streak behind Kansas (9).
  • Gonzaga is 21-17 in the NCAA Tournament in 18 appearances and 19-15 under head coach Mark Few. The Bulldogs are competing in their 17th straight NCAA postseason - the fourth longest active streak.
  • Gonzaga is one of just five programs (Duke, Louisville, Notre Dame and North Carolina) with both its men's and women's basketball programs in the 2015 NCAA Sweet-16.
  • Two WCC programs - No. 11 BYU and No. 2 Gonzaga captured berths in the 2015 NCAA Tournament, marking the fourth straight year and the fifth time in six years the WCC has been a multi-bid league.
  • Saint Mary's earned its second straight NIT berth. Pepperdine competed in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI), while Portland played in the CollegeInsiders.com Postseason Tournament (CIT).
  • Five West Coast Conference programs advanced to the 2015 postseason. This marks the second straight year that at least half of the membership advanced to postseason play. Six WCC institutions competed in the 2014, including a record matching two each in the NCAA (BYU, Gonzaga) and NIT (Saint Mary's, San Francisco).
  • The WCC is the only league to boast championships in all four current postseason tournaments - CBI (Santa Clara, 2013), CIT (Santa Clara, 2011), NCAA (San Francisco 1955-56) and NIT (USF, 1949).*
  • Gonzaga's Kevin Pangos and Kyle Wiltjer earned spots on the 2015 Naismith Award Semifinalist list. Wiltjer and BYU's Tyler Haws earned spots on the Wooden Award National Ballot.**
