WCCTV caught up with the Gaels at their recent media day before they traveled down to Houston. Your host George Devine sat down with seniors Omar Samhan and Ben Allen, as well as junior Mickey McConnell, and Australian standouts Clint Steindl and Matthew Dellavedova.
The Saint Mary's-Baylor game will be aired live on CBS with the winner taking on the winner of top-seed Duke and No. 4 Purdue for a spot in the NCAA Final Four in Indianapolis.
Friday's game will be the first ever match-up between the Gaels and Baylor. SMC advanced to the Sweet 16 for the second time in program history by defeating No. 7 seed Richmond (80-71) and followed that up with an upset win over No. 2 seed Villanova (75-68) in Providence, RI. The Bears defeated No. 14 seed Sam Houston State (68-59) and No. 11 seed Old Dominion (76-68) over the weekend in New Orleans, LA.
SMC (28-5), has tied the record for the most wins in program history, and are making their first appearance in the Sweet 16 since the 1959 team. With the win over Richmond, the Gaels won their first NCAA Tournament game since the 1959 team and under head coach Randy Bennett, the Gaels are now 2-2 in NCAA Tournament play. Leading the Gaels is senior center Omar Samhan who has scored 60 points, on 24-of-32 shooting, while pulling down 19 rebounds.
