April 1, 2009

DETROIT, Mich. - Five West Coast Conference men's basketball players will participate in the Final Four festivities in Detroit. Gonzaga's Micah Downs and Jeremy Pargo will compete in the 21st Annual State Farm College Slam Dunk Championship, while teammate Josh Heytvelt, along with Santa Clara's John Bryant and Saint Mary's Diamon Simpson, have been selected to participate in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) College All-Star Game.

The WCC and the Pac-10 conference led the way with three players from each conference being invited to participate in the NABC 2009 Hershey's College All-Star game, accounting for six of the 20 Division I senior student-athletes selected.

Heytvelt and Bryant will play on the Reese's All-Stars that will be coached by Bruce Weber of the University of Illinois and Purdue University head coach Matt Painter, while Simpson will play for the Hershey's All-Stars coached by Nolan Richardson and Mike Anderson of Missouri.

The Slam Dunk Championship will be held Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Pacific Time. Joining Pargo and Downs in the field will be Jermaine Taylor, Central Florida; Tony Danridge, New Mexico; Charlie Coley III, Charlotte; Tyrone Kent, Toledo; Terry Evans, Wisconsin-Green Bay, and Wesley Matthews, Marquette.

Pargo and Kent both hail from Chicago and played on the same AAU team.

"He's about 6-5 and can jump. It will be between him and Micah," Pargo said, discounting him from matching up with those two.
