Two WCC Men's Basketball Teams Ranked In Final ESPN/USA Today Top 25

April 7, 2010

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The West Coast Conference closed out the 2009-10 men's basketball season on a high note with two teams ranked in the final ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. Following its Sweet Sixteen run in the NCAA Tournament, the Saint Mary's Gaels finished the season ranked No. 19, while Gonzaga, which captured its record 10th WCC regular season title, ends the season with a No. 23 ranking.

It marks the first time in conference history that two teams have been ranked in the final poll. It also marks the third consecutive season that two WCC teams have cracked the top 25 in the same season.

The WCC is one of seven conferences that have multiple teams ranked in the final poll. The WCC tied the ACC, the Mountain West, and the SEC for the fourth most teams in the final rankings, edging out the Pac-10, the A-10, the MVC, the Horizon, and the Ivy, which landed one team apiece. The Big East, the Big 12, and the Big Ten tied for first with four teams each.

The Gaels enjoyed a historic season, tying the record for the most wins in program history (28-6), and made their first appearance in the Sweet 16 since the 1959 season. With their win over Richmond in the first round, the Gaels won their first NCAA Tournament game since 1959.

Gonzaga went 27-7 this season, won a 10th straight West Coast Conference regular-season title and advanced to the title game of the WCC Tournament for the 13th straight season.
