Zags' Austin Daye Headlines 11 Former WCC Players in NBA Summer Leagues

SAN BRUNO, Calif., -- Austin Daye is one of five former Bulldogs and 11 former WCC players to be invited to play for an NBA team in one of the NBA's annual summer leagues. He is joined by teammates Micah Downs, Josh Heytvelt, Jeremy Pargo, and former Zag Adam Morrison. Other former WCC players to compete this summer are Pepperdine's Alex Acker, Portland's Pooh Jeter, Saint Mary's Patrick Mills and Diamon Simpson, San Diego's Nick Lewis, and Santa Clara's John Bryant.

Daye, the 15th overall pick in this year's NBA draft, will be playing for the Detroit Pistons. The All-WCC honorable mention averaged 12.7 ppg and 5.8 rpg while averaging 22.5 minutes/game.

Downs, the 2009 WCC Tournament MVP, will be suiting up for the Phoenix Suns. He averaged 15.0 ppg and 7.5 rpg to lead his team during the conference tournament.

Heytvelt, an All-WCC First team member, will be playing for the Washington Wizards. He led his team in scoring (14.9), while ranking second in rebounding (6.5) and ended his career ranked fourth in blocked shots (95) on the Zags' all-time career list.

Pargo, an All-WCC honorable mention, will join Daye on the Pistons. A former WCC Player of the Year, he led his team in assists (4.9) and ranks third in assists (589) and second in steals (170) on the Zags' all-time career list.

Morrison, who is currently signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, will suit up for the defending NBA Champions. He was a 2006 WCC Player of the Year and runner up for national player of the year honors and was the nation's leading scorer (28.1) that season.

Acker, who will be playing for the New York Knicks, was the 60th overall selection by the Detroit Pistons in 2005. A former WCC Newcomer of the Year and All-WCC First team selection, he averaged 14.5 ppg and 5.6 rpg for the Waves.

Jeter will be suiting up for the Portland Trailblazers, making it his third stint in the summer league. While playing for the Pilots, he was a two-time All-WCC First team member and he ranks second on the Pilots' all-time career scoring (1,708) list.

Mills, the 55th overall pick in this year's draft, will be playing join Jeter with the Trailblazers. Twice an All-WCC First team selection, he averaged 18.1 ppg last season and was a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award and and the Naismith Trophy Award.

Simpson, who will be competing for the Wizards, had one of the most storied careers in the WCC. He was a three-time All-WCC First team selection and is the only player in WCC history to win back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year awards. He also finished as the Gaels' all-time leader in rebounds, blocks, and steals.

Lewis, a former All-WCC First team selection, will be suiting up for the Chicago Bulls. He ranks second in scoring (1,453) and fifth in rebounding (573) on the Toreros' all-time career list.

Bryant, the reigning WCC Player of the Year, has been invited to play for the Sacramento Kings. He ended his career as one of the most dominant big men in Bay Area history. He finished third behind Bill Russell and Ollie Johnson in career rebounds with 1,152 and led the nation with 26 double-doubles, including a streak of 15 straight. He also ranks second in blocks (246) on the WCC's all-time career list.
