Portland's van der Mars named WCC Player of the Week

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The West Coast Conference has named its Men's Basketball Player of the Week for December 9, 2013.

THOMAS VAN DER MARS, JR., C, PORTLAND

Portland junior center Thomas van der Mars is the West Coast Conference Player of the Week. He scored 19 points and pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds as the Pilots won at crosstown rival Portland State 92-76 Saturday night. Van der Mars did most of his damage with a dominating second half that included 17 points and 10 rebounds. Overall, he was 6-for-8 from the field and made 7-of-9 free throw attempts in the victory.

The Gouda, Netherlands native picked up his third double-double of the season in Saturday's win, and is averaging 16.2 points and 9.5 rebounds over his last six games. Van der Mars is shooting a team-high 62.3 percent from the field this season, good for fifth in the West Coast Conference.
