Non-conference action heats up with WCC play looming

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- Final exams are complete on WCC campuses, and non-conference play has resumed. With just two weeks to go until WCC play begins, action is heating up. This week, BYU plays at Baylor on ESPN2, and San Francisco takes part in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamondhead Classic.

WCC QUICK HITS

  • Through December 17, WCC teams boast a .659 winning percentage (60-31) vs. non-conference foes. See the attached notes for the breakdown.

  • Over the last two weeks, West Coast Conference teams are 8-5 in true road games.

  • WCC teams boast a record of 40-7 (.851) at home through December 17.

  • At 9-2, Santa Clara is off to its best start since 1988-89.

  • For the second time in its 60-year history of men's basketball (2008), the West Coast Conference had three teams participating in the NCAA Tournament (BYU, Gonzaga, Saint Mary's). In 2012, the WCC also registered five postseason teams for the second straight year (LMU, USF).

  • BYU senior Brandon Davies is the WCC Player of the Week. Davies scored a career-high 33 points in the Cougars win at Weber State, connecting on 14-of-17 field goal attempts.

  • Only five Division I teams have won at least 25 games in each of the last five seasons. Three of those teams (BYU, Gonzaga, Saint Mary's) call the WCC home. The other two: Duke, Kansas.

  • Three WCC players have been named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50: Gonzaga F Elias Harris, BYU F Brandon Davies, and Saint Mary's G Matthew Dellavedova all made the initial cut.

  • Three WCC players have also been named to the Naismith Trophy list: Gonzaga F Elias Harris, Gonzaga G Kevin Pangos, and Saint Mary's G Matthew Dellavedova are all on the initial watch list for the award, handed out in April.
