Dec. 31, 2013
SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named its Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for December 31, 2013.
WEST COAST CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – MALCOLM BROOKS, JR., G, PEPPERDINE
Junior guard Malcolm Brooks came a bit out of nowhere to lead Pepperdine to one of its best weekends in a long time. The first-year Wave set career highs in both of the team’s victories, posting team highs of 20 points in a 75-64 win over San Diego and 24 points in an 80-74 win over BYU. In the weekend sweep, he averaged 22.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists while shooting 60.0% from the field (15-for-25) and 58.9% (10-for-17) from three-point range. He made four 3-pointers against the Toreros and six against the Cougars.
In the win against San Diego, Brooks scored 15 of his 20 points in the first half as the Waves jumped to an eight-point lead at halftime. In the win against BYU, Brooks scored 19 of his 24 in the second half as the Waves fought off a Cougar comeback attempt. He was 5-for-6 for three in the second half, and his six three-pointers in all were the most by any Wave in a game since January 2010.
Brooks not only led the Waves to their first 2-0 start in the WCC since 2009-10, but the first time Pepperdine had won both games in one WCC weekend since January 2010. The Waves snapped a six-game losing streak to the Toreros and beat BYU for the first time since the Cougars joined the conference.
Brooks was averaging just 7.7 points after 12 non-conference games and had only reached double-figures once prior to this past weekend. He made 12 three-pointers in the first 12 games of the season, then added 10 over the last two games. Brooks’ season averages are now 9.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists after 14 games.
