Freshman Shane Mason Shares First Round Lead at John Hayt Collegiate Invitational

Freshman Shane Mason carded an even-par 72 and shares the first-round lead at the 15-team John Hayt Collegiate Invitational that opened Sunday at the Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. The Waves' freshman is tied with UCLA's Kevin Chappell.

Both players are one-shot ahead of Vanderbilt's Jon Curran and Dustin Johnson of Coastal Carolina, who shot 1-over par scores of 73.

Mason's opening round included 10 pars, four birdies, a bogey and double bogey.

Alabama holds the first-round lead in the team standings after shooting a 15-over par total of 303 and has a one-shot lead over Vanderbilt (304). Georgia State (305) is two shots back in third place while Charlotte and Augusta State are tied for fourth with 19-over par totals of 307.

Pepperdine is tied with Notre Dame and South Carolina for 10th place and eight shots off the lead after carding a 23-over par 311.

Junior Colin Wilcox is tied for 23rd after shooting a 5-over 77 and fellow classmate Jesse Barnsley is tied for 46th after posting a 7-over 79.

The 54-hole tournament, which includes six teams ranked in Golfweek's Top 30 poll, continues on Monday with second round action and can be followed live on the Internet at www.golfstat.com. The final round will take place on Tuesday.
