Westlake Village, Calif. -
Turning in one of its most impressive performances in recent years, the 28th-ranked Pepperdine men's golf topped a field that included six teams currently ranked in the Top 25 as it captured the 15-team Ashworth Collegiate Invitational that concluded Tuesday at the par-71, 6,742-yard North Ranch Country Club in nearby Westlake Village.
Shooting the low round of the day - a 3-under 281 - Pepperdine finished the 54-hole tournament with a 9-over par 861 to register a nine-shot victory over host USC (870). The Waves started off well in the tournament as they led after the first round, shooting a 1-under 283 to hold a one-shot advantage over Washington.
"We got off to a good start and just carried that momentum throughout the tournament," head coach John Geiberger said. "Adam (Porzak) shot his career-best round to begin the tournament and Alex Coe and J.J. Wood posted solid scores in the final round.
"It was a great team-win as we received contributions throughout our line-up and it came against a strong field," Geiberger added.
The victory was the first for the Waves since they captured the 2005 West Coast Conference Championships.
Following Pepperdine and USC atop the field was Stanford (873), which finished third, and UCLA and Oklahoma, who tied for fourth with 23-over par scores of 875.
Oklahoma's Anthony Kim claimed individual medalist honors, finishing at 9-under 204 to register a seven-shot victory over Stanford's Zack Miller (211).
Porzak registered the highest finish of his career as he tied Coast Carolina's Zack Byrd for third place with a 1-under score of 212. After opening with a 3-under 68, Porzak carded back-to-back rounds of 1-over 72.
Coe and Wood tied for 10th with 3-over par scores of 216.
Pepperdine is next in action on Sunday, March 12, when it begins play at the Jim Hackler Invitational in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
