Newport Beach, CA - With rounds of 302-303-307 the Saint Mary's men's golf team posted a three-round score of 912 (+48) to finish in third place at the 27th Annual Anteater Invitational. The Gaels were led by freshman Daniel Cone who posted a fifth place individual finish at the par-72, 6,911-yard Big Canyon Golf Club.
Saint Mary's entered the third and final round in third place and held onto its position following a final round 307 (+19). The Gaels finished 28 shots off the pace of host UC Irvine, which posted its win at its own tournament for the first time since 1996. Arizona's "B" team finished second with a score of 903 (+39), SMC was third, UC Riverside finished fourth (914) and San Francisco rounded out the top-5 with a 54-hole score of 916.
SMC's Daniel Cone was the top individual finisher for the Gaels, after posting a final round score of 1-under par 71. Cone, who was playing in his third career tournament, posted a career-low 71 on Tuesday to move up from 12th place after 36 holes into fifth place by the end of the tournament for his first career top-5 finish. Cone finished 10 shots off the pace of medalist Domingo Jojola of San Francisco, who was the only player in the field to shoot under-par. Jojola shot a score of 212 (-4) to finish four shots clear of CS Northridge's Kenny Kim and five shots ahead of UC Irvine's Brian Edick.
Mike McRae posted a final round score of 78 (+6) and dropped from seventh place to a tie for 12th. McRae posted rounds of 76 and 73 in Monday's and finished with a 54-hole score of 227 (+11). McRae's younger brother Robert posted a final round score of 79 and finished five shots behind Mike for a three-round total of 232 (+16) and tied for 20th place overall.
Josh Kelley posted a final round score of 79 for rounds of 73-81-79 for a three-round total 233 (+17) and a 24th place finish. Rounding out the Gaels' individual play was Richard Conlin, who was playing in his first collegiate tournament. Conlin posted a final round 85 to finish in 48th place overall with a score of 249 (+33).
The Gaels will return to action on Monday, March 5-6 when they compete in the Callaway Golf Invitational hosted by the University of San Diego. The Callaway Golf Invite will be played at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, CA.
