Rancho Santa Fe, CA - The Saint Mary's men's golf team posted a score of 311 (+23) in the final round of the 2006 Callaway Golf Invitational to post an eighth place finish in the 16-team event. The Gaels shot rounds of 297-302-311 for a 54-hole total of 910 (+46) at the par 72, 6,911-yard The Farm Golf Course.
SMC's final round play was highlighted by sophomore Mike McRae's 2-over par 74. McRae posted a top-10 finish with a score of 222 (+6) to finish tied for eighth in the individual competition. McRae's opening round of 70 (-2) was the lowest by any Gael in the event, and he posted a 78 in the second round of the tournament.
Finishing three shots behind McRae, and tied for 19th place, was junior Chadd Cocco with a score of 225 (+9). After posting rounds of 74 and 73 to open the event, Cocco concluded the tournament with a 78 (+6) in Tuesday's final round.
Heading into the final round, Josh Kelley had the lowest score for SMC at 146 (+2) but struggled to an 8-over par 80 on Tuesday. Kelley's total score of 266 was good for a tie for 22nd place overall. Brett Mormann posted a final round score of 79 to finish tied for 57th with a score of 239 (+23) and Russell Yu rounded out the Gaels' scoring with an 83. Yu finished the tournament with a score of 241 (+25) and tied for 65th overall.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Monday, March 27 when it competes in The Western Intercollegiate at the Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, CA.
