(Santa Cruz, CA) - The USD golf team moved up four places in today's final round to finish in a tie for 5th place at the 61st Western Open Intercollegiate being played at the Pasatiempo Golf Club (par 70; 6,432 yards). USD shot a final round team score of 289 to finish at 868 with Long Beach State. Purdue won the team title at 849 and was followed by Cal (864), Fresno State (866) and Washington (867). Xavier's John Streibich shot a tourney record 63 today to win medalist honors at 199. He edged out Purdue's Pariya Junhasavasdikul by one stroke who carded a 66. Rounding out the top-five individuals was Tyler Docking of Kansas (207), Mark Ogren of Illinois (208) and Michael Jensen of Cal (209). USD's top finisher was Darrin Hall who shot 72 today to finish at 214, good for a tie for 13th.
USD's Bucky Coe, who was tied for 11th after two rounds, shot a final round 78 and finished in a tie for 29th. Joe Panzeri had the team's best score today as he fired a 67 to move up into a tie for 29th with Coe at 214. Mike Barry (T39 at 221) and Dale Smith (T68 at 229) rounded out the team's scoring. After opening the tourney with a 78, Barry rebounded to shoot solid rounds of 71 and 72.
USD's next tournament will be at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in Santa Barbara (April 2-3).
