Pasatiempo, CA - The Saint Mary's men's golf team wrapped up the 61st Annual Western Intercollegiate with a 12th place finish in the 18-team field. The Gaels posted rounds of 288-293-297 for a total of 878 (+38) at the par-70, 6,432 yard Pasatiempo Golf Course. Purdue took home the team title with a score of 849 (+9), posting a 15-shot victory over second place California.
Josh Kelley was the top performer for the Gaels, as he posted a 54-hole total of 211 (+1) and finished in a tie for sixth place. Kelley closed the Western Intercollegiate with a final round score of 72 (+2) after shooting rounds of 70 and 69 on Monday.
Kelley entered the clubhouse 10 shots better than Daniel Cone, who was the Gaels' second best finish in the event. Cone closed the tournament with a final round score of 72 (+2) for his lowest round of the tournament. Cone opened the tournament with rounds of 75 and 74 on Monday, and he finished tied for 39th overall with a total score of 221 (+11).
Both Mike and Robert McRae finished the Western Intercollegiate tied for 56th place with a total of 226 (+16). Robert McRae posted a final round score of 74 while older brother Mike closed the tournament with a score of 80.
Brett Mormann rounded out the Gaels scoring with a 79 in the final round, which was the fourth score used by Saint Mary's on Tuesday. Mormann posted rounds of 76 and 74 on Monday for a 54-hole score of 229 (+19) and finished in a tie for 69th place overall.
Xavier's John Streibich took home individual medalist honors after tying a tournament record for the lowest round with a 63 on Tuesday. Streibich's total of 199 also matched the lowest finish by an individual in the 61 years of the event. Streibich posted a one-shot win over Purdue's Junhasavasudul. Tyler Docking of Kansas was 3-under, Mark Ogren of Illinois finished at 2-under and Michael Jensen of California was 1-under to round out the top five.
Saint Mary's will have two weeks off before returning to the links in the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate on April 2-3 at the River Course at Alisal in Solvang, CA. The Pacific Coast Intercollegiate will be the final regular season event for the Gaels before competing at the West Coast Conference Championships on April 16-17.
