Golf Ends Day One of SMC/Merrill Lynch Invitational in Ninth Place

Pebble Beach, CA - The Saint Mary's golf team ended Day 1 of the Saint Mary's/Merrill Lynch Invitational in a tie for ninth place on Monday night after shooting 611 through 36 holes at Poppy Hills in Pebble Beach, CA. The SMC/Merrill Lynch Invitational features 19 teams and will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday.

Saint Mary's shot 309 in the first round Monday morning and ended the afternoon round with a team total of 302. Xavier leads the tournament after 36 holes with a team total of 593. Lamar University is a close second after posting a 394 total.

The Gaels were led by junior Chadd Cocco, who posted a 77 and 74 on Monday, finishing the day tied for 23 with teammate Brett Mormann. Mormann also shot a 77 and 74 in the first and second rounds to finish seven shots over par.

Rounding out the scoring for Saint Mary's was Joshua Kelly (152), Michael McRae (158) and Hans Olson (163).

Fresno State's Jason Anthony finished as the first day individual leader, posting a 70 and 73 for a 143 total. Anthony stands 1-under on the par 72 course.

Barry Schenk of Weber State stands in second place with a 145 total and five players are tied in third after shooting 147 after two rounds.

The Saint Mary's/Merrill Lynch Invitational will conclude on Tuesday with the third and final round beginning at 7:30 a.m. The final groups of the tournament are scheduled to tee off at 9:30 a.m. at Poppy Hills.
