Golf Finishes Eighth in SMC/Merrill Lynch Invitational

Pebble Beach, CA - The Saint Mary's men's golf team posted a final round score of 310 (+22) for a 54-hole total of 921 (+57) to finish the Saint Mary's/Merrill Lynch Invitational in a tie for eighth place in the 19-team tournament. From the par 72, 6,833-yard Poppy Hills Golf Course, the Gaels entered the final round tied for ninth after rounds of 309 (+21) and 302 (+14) on Monday.

Chadd Cocco led the Gaels with a score of 227 (+12), after posting a 4-over par 76 on Tuesday. Cocco, who tied for 19th place, posted rounds of 77 and 74 on Monday's 36-hole opening day. Brett Mormann finished second for the Gaels and tied for 28th overall after rounds of 77, 74 and 79. Mormann was one of three Gaels to shoot 74 in the second round. The score of 74 was the lowest by any SMC player in the tournament.

Josh Kelley finished tied for 38th overall with a total score of 232 (+16). Kelley opened the tournament with rounds of 78 and 74 on Monday and finished the final round with a score of 80. Mike McRae finished 44th overall with a score of 233 (+17) with rounds of 78, 80 and 75, respectively.

Freshman Hans Olson made his first appearance for the Gaels and posted a score of 247. Olson opened his first tournament with a score of five-over par 77 on Monday morning before posting a 86 in the afternoon round. Olson closed the tournament with an 84 on Tuesday.

Lamar took home the team medalist honors by one stroke over Xavier with a score of 891 (+27). Fresno State (908) finished third, Texas-Arlington (909) was fourth, and UC Santa Barbara (916) rounded out the top-five. Fresno State's Jason Anthony took home the individual medalist with a score of 218 (+4). Anthony tied Lamar's Oliver Bekker for first place overall, but won the tie-breaker by default. Bekker posted the only under-par round on Tuesday with a 1-under 71 to lead his Cardinals to the team title.

Saint Mary's will return to the links on Monday and Tuesday, April 17-18 in the West Coast Conference Championships. The WCC Championships will be played at the Saddle Creek Golf Course in Copperopolis, CA.
