Pebble Beach, CA (April 11) -- The Loyola Marymount men's golf team wrapped up its final tune-up before the West Coast Conference Championship with an eighth place finish in the Saint Mary's College/Merrill Lynch Invitational on Tuesday.
Taking on a tough 19-team field and an even tougher course at Pebble Beach, the Lions finished second among the six WCC teams in the field, tied at eighth with host Saint Mary's with team scores of 921. Santa Clara was four strokes better at 917. Lamar University won the tournament at 891.
Pacing the Lions once again was freshman Brian Locke and sophomore Jason D'Amore. Locke is doig his best to match D'Amore's freshman of the year season from a season ago with another top-20 finish. He placed in a tie for 16th with a 226. He led the entire field with 13 birdies in the three rounds.
For the tournament Poppy Hills Golf Course dominated. After just eight rounds of par or better golf through two rounds, only two players had rounds of par or better in the final round, making Locke's 13 birdies more impressive.
Just one stroke behind was D'Amore with a 227. He was one of the leaders on the par-five holes, going four-under par on all par-five holes for the three rounds.
Rounding out the Lions scoring was sophomore Josh Escobedo with a 234. He finished in a tie for 49th of the field of 100 golfers thanks to his 35 pars in the tournament, third best in the field. Senior Chaz Inouye finished in a tie for 56th with a 235 while freshman Louie Bergna was in a tie for 74th with a 240.
The Lions will prepare for the WCC Championships, which begin with the practice round on April 16. Rounds one and two will be Monday, April 17 with the final round on April 18. For the second year the tournament will be at Saddlecreek Golf Course in Copperopolis, Calif.
