BYU Wins First West Coast Conference Men's Golf Championship

April 16, 2014

BREMERTON, Wash. - BYU surged to its first West Coast Conference Men's Golf Championship with the final day's best round under difficult conditions at the Gold Mountain Golf Club Pacific's Byron Meth was similarly unfazed by the weather and carded a 1-under 71 to seize a 7-shot victory at 8-under.

BYU posted a four-stroke win in a tightly bunched field. The Cougars finished at 10-over 874 (285, 295, 294), good for a four shot win against runner-up Santa Clara at 878 (288, 292, 298). San Francisco finished in third one stroke behind its Bay Area rivals at 879 (288, 294, 297). Saint Mary's, the 36-hole leader, finished fourth at 882 (292, 285, 305). Just 10 shots separated the top six teams in the field.

Meth dominated the field and led wire-to-wire, in polar opposite to the team race. Despite soggy and windy conditions, the Tiger junior carded three birdies in the final round, three coming in his final eight holes.

Four players in the field finished at par of better - Saint Mary's Alex Bungert (73, 67, 75) and San Francisco's Jobim Carlos (73, 72, 70) shared runner-up honors at 1-under, while San Francisco's Seb Crookall-Nixon was fourth at even-par 216 (70, 74, 72). Two Cougars posted top-10 finishes, led by Justin Keiley (71, 73, 73) and Jordan Rodgers (73, 71, 73) at 1-over 217, good for a share of fifth place with USF's Cory McElyea (68, 74, 75).

San Diego's Grant Forrest was named WCC Player of the Year after collecting three medalist honors in 2013-14, while BYU mentor Bruce Brockbank earned WCC Coach of the Year accolades as voted on by his peers. Santa Clara's Tyler Kertson was tabbed as top freshman.
