Copperopolis, CA - The Saint Mary's men's golf team posted a 36-hole score of 602 (+26) and is currently in fifth place at the 2006 West Coast Conference Men's Golf Championships from the Saddle Creek Golf Course. SMC opened the championship with a score of 297 (+9) in the morning round and followed that with a 305 (+17) in the afternoon.
At the par-72, 6,836-yard Saddle Creek Golf Course, Brett Mormann played solid for the Gaels in his first conference tournament. Mormann opened the day by shooting 3-under over the first nine holes before closing the first round with a 1-over par 73. In the afternoon round, Mormann was at even par for the round after birding the eighth hole, then posted a bogey on five of the next seven holes. Back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17 had the sophomore at 3-over par for the round, but a bogey on the par-5 finishing hole closed his round at 4-over par 76 for a 36-hole total of 149 to tie for 10th place.
Tied with Mormann for 10th place is fellow sophomore Mike McRae who also shot rounds of 73 and 76 on Monday. McRae opened the championship with a 1-over par 73 which included four birdies, one bogey and two double bogeys. McRae made the turn at even par, but birdied on 14 and 17 could not complement a bogey on 10 and a double bogey on 12. On his second 18, McRae made the turn at 3-over par and then posted a score of 1-over par on the back nine.
Josh Kelley opened the day with an up and down front nine that saw the sophomore post four birdies, three bogeys and a double bogie for to make the turn at 1-over par. After a bogey at the par-4 10th hole, Kelley posted four straight pars before a birdie at the 15th. He would double bogey the 18th hole to shot 75 (+3) in the morning. Kelley's afternoon round resulted in a 79 (+7) for a 36-hole score of 154 and tied for 29th place.
SMC's top player, Chadd Cocco posted an 81 to open the tournament after posted making the turn at 9-over par. Cocco regrouped at the turn and shot even par on the back nine of his opening round. Cocco returned to form for the afternoon round and shot 74 (+2) to pace the Gaels in the second round. In the second round, Cocco posted a 35 on the front nine and then slipped to 2-over par by the end of the round after shooting 3-over par on the back nine.
SMC's final player in the field was Hans Olson, who was playing in just his second collegiate tournament. Playing in the fifth position for the Gaels, Olson's opening round of 76 (+4) was the fourth score counted for SMC. Olson's consistent first round play looked like it would continue as he birdied the first hole in the second round. Olson would then triple bogey the second hole and posted bogeys on four, five and six and finished the front nine at 5-over par. Olson shot 40 on the back nine for a second round score of 81 (+9) for a 36-hole total of 157 (+13) and tied for 33rd overall.
Saint Mary's will tee it up for the final round of the WCC Championship beginning at 8:10 a.m. on the first tee of the Saddle Creek Golf Course on Tuesday. Olson will lead off for SMC at 8:10 a.m., followed by Cocco at 8:20 a.m., Kelley at 8:30 a.m., Mormann at 8:40 a.m., and McRae at 8:50 a.m.
