Tempe, AZ (May 17) - Sophomore Brian Locke opened the 2007 NCAA West Regional with a 69 at the Arizona State Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. The round has Locke tied for 21st as 39 players posted rounds under 70 in temperatures that soared above 100 degrees on Thursday as the round finished.
Locke's round featured six birdies and three bogies as he posted a one-under 36 on the back nine of the course, which played as the front nine for Locke as he opened the round on hole 10. He posted a two-under 33 on holes one through nine.
Playing as an individual, Locke needs to finish among the top-two players not represented by one of the top-10 teams to advance to the NCAA Championships May 30-June 1 in Virginia. Locke is currently one stroke behind a group of four players whose teams are currently not in the top-10.
The day started with a birdie on the 548-yard par-5 10th. Locke then went to two-under after a birdie on the par-4, 350-yard 13th. He would stay at one-under until the 18th where he shot a five on the par-four, 471-yard hole.
Locke would recover with birdies on the par-four second, the par-four fourth and the par-five fifth. Heading into the par-3, 209-yard sixth hole, he was at four under. However, he posted scores of four on both the six and the par-three seventh to go to two-under heading into the final two holes.
He would par the par-four eighth and then finish the day with a birdie on the par-four, 448-yard ninth.
Locke's second round begins at 8:32 a.m. on the first tee, Friday, May 18.
