Pebble Beach, CA - The Saint Mary's men's golf team posted a score of 290 (+2) in the final round of the Saint Mary's Invitational from Poppy Hills Golf Course. In the 18-team event, Saint Mary's entered the final round in ninth place and moved up six spots to finish tied for third, following rounds of 302-291-290-883 (+19).
Senior Chadd Cocco shot the low round of the day with a 69 on Tuesday. Cocco used the final round score of 3-under par to jump from 17th overall to tied for third overall. Cocco posted rounds of 74 and 73 on Monday, and with his 69 on Tuesday, he finished the 54-hole event at even-par 216.
Cocco finished two shots off the pace of medalist Wesley Williams of Baylor University. Williams, who helped Baylor take home the team title, shot rounds of 71-70-73 to finish at 2-under par for the tournament. Baylor finished the tournament with a total score of 878 (+14) and finished four shots ahead of second place UAB and five shots better then the Gaels and UT-Arlington.
At the difficult par-72, 6,833-yard Poppy Hills Golf Course, Mike McRae posted his second straight even par round to and finished 11th overall. McRae posted rounds of 74 and 72 on Monday, then shot 72 on Tuesday to finish at 219 (+3) overall.
Daniel Cone and Robert McRae posted rounds of 74 and 75, respectively to help the Gaels post the day's lowest team round. Cone, who opened the tournament with a round of 80, shot 73 in the afternoon on Monday, and followed that with a 2-over par round on Tuesday. Cone finished the first tournament of the season tied for 41st overall with a 54-hole total of 227 (+11).
Robert McRae finished tied for 47th overall following rounds of 79-74-75 to total 228 (+12) for the tournament. Josh Kelley finished the tournament in a tie for 36th place overall, but shot a team-high round of 79 on Tuesday. Kelley had rounds of 74 and 73 on Monday to open the tournament.
SMC's four individuals of Giuliano DeLecce, Richard Conlin, Hans Olson, and Kevin Smith also completed play in the tournament on Tuesday. DeLecce, who posted an 81 on Tuesday finished tied for 72nd overall, Conlin carded a 79 for a 78th place finish, Olson's 81 helped him finish 90th overall, and Smith shot 85 for a 54-hole total of 247 and a 93rd place finish in his first collegiate tournament.
Saint Mary's will return to play in the Xavier Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, October 1-2. The Xavier Invitational will be played at The Oasis Golf Club in Loveland, OH.
