Long Beach, CA - The Saint Mary's men's golf team opened the 2006-07 season on Thursday and posted a 36-hole total of 569 (+1) at the Del Walker Intercollegiate to hold a tie with Arkansas following the first day of action. The Gaels shot rounds of 284 and 284 at the Par-71, 6,633-yard Virginia Country Club.
Leading the Gaels on the first day was junior Josh Kelley who opened the season with rounds of 71 and 71 to post a 36-hole score of 141 (-1). Kelley is tied for fourth place and will enter the third and final round just two shots off the pace of Kyle Collins and Thomas Kearney of Texas-San Antonio.
Joining Kelley in the day-one top-10 are freshman Patrick Duncan and junior Mike McRae following scores of even-par 142 on Thursday. Duncan posted the third best round of the day in the morning when he fired a 2-under 69 in his first collegiate round. Duncan followed up his morning round with a 2-over par 73 in the afternoon.
McRae made the first trip around the Virginia Country Club in 72 strokes for a 1-over par score. McRae then evened his play on the second 18 when he posted a 1-under score of 70. Mike's younger brother, freshman Robert McRae is two shots behind the pace of Duncan and Mike McRae after rounds of 73 and 71 and is tied for 19th place in his first collegiate tournament.
Rounding out the Gaels play on Thursday was Brett Mormann who posted rounds of 75 and 74 for a 36-hole total of 149 (+7). Mormann is tied for 49th place out of the 75-player field.
The Gaels will look to win the first tournament of the season for the second straight year on Friday with the third and final round of 18 holes at the Virginia Country Club.
