Golf Takes 12th in Season Opener

Long Beach, CA (Sept. 15) - The Loyola Marymount University men's golf team finished the 2006 Del Walker Intercollegiate in 12th place after a final round of 295 at Virginia Country Club in Long Beach, Calif., on Friday. The Lions finished with a three-round total of 879.

The Lions were led by sophomores Brian Locke and Louie Bergna with three-round totals of 218. It was the best 54-hole tournament in the young career of Bergna. After rounds of 69 and 75 on Thursday, the Riverside native posted a 74 to finish in a tie for 26th in the 74-man field. Locke posted an opening round of 74 but finished with a pair of rounds at par.

LMU finished two strokes better than Pacific as fellow West Coast Conference foe Saint Mary's claimed the tournament title with a three-round 856.

Rounding out the Lions' scoring was Josh Escobedo with an eight-over par 221, Jason D'Amore with a 10-over 223 and LMU newcomer Brandin Cohen with a 233.

The Lions will return to action on Sept. 25-26 when they travel to the Husky Invitational hosted by the University of Washington at the Washington National Golf Club.
