Long Beach, CA - Saint Mary's junior golfer Josh Kelley made a 15-foot birdie putt on the 54th hole of the Del Walker Intercollegiate to help the Gaels capture the team title. SMC tied Arkansas for first place in the tournament, but the Gaels took home the team title based on the fifth player scorecards. SMC's freshman Robert McRae shot a final round 74, which was one-shot better then Arkansas' Andrew Landry.
Saint Mary's and Arkansas finished the tournament with 54-hole scores of 856 (+4), which were five shots better than third place San Diego. The Gaels posted scores of 284-285-287 over three rounds at the par-71, 6,633-yard Virginia Country Club in Long Beach, CA.
After Patrick Duncan and Mike McRae narrowly missed birdie putts on the 54th hole, Kelley came through for the team with a clutch 15-footer. Kelley finished the round with a bogey on 17 before making the clutch birdie on 18. With the teams even after the stroke play, the tie was settled by the third round play of the team's fifth players. After shooting 4-over par on the front nine, Robert McRae posted a 1-under par 35 on the back nine to help secure the tournament for the Gaels.
Kelley's third round score of 1-over par 72 gave him a three-day total of 213 (E) for a third place finish in the individual field. Kelley missed the medalist honors by one stroke. Aaron Conrad of San Jose State and Joe Panzeri of San Diego shared the top individual honors at 212 (-1).
Playing in his first college tournament, Patrick Duncan played like a veteran. Duncan posted rounds of 69-73-72 for a 54-hole score of 214 (+1), which was good for a share of eighth place. Duncan had a rollercoaster third round, which opened with three birdies over the first five holes. After a triple bogey on the 10th hole, Duncan was 2-over for the round. Duncan had birdies on 12 and 16 to help him to a third round with a score of 72 (+1).
Michael McRae was the third-best finisher for the Gaels with a 54-hole score of 215 (+2) and tied for 12th place overall with rounds of 72-70-73. McRae's final round included three birdies, three bogeys and a triple bogey.
SMC's best round of the day was posted by junior Brett Mormann who followed up rounds of 75 and 74 yesterday with a 1-under par 70 on Friday. Mormann finished the tournament tied for 30th with a score of 6-over par 219.
Robert McRae posted a 25th place finish in his first college tournament following rounds of 73-71-74. En route to his final round score of 74, McRae had one birdie, one bogey and a triple bogey to close the Del Walker Intercollegiate.
Saint Mary's will return to the links on October 2-3 when the Gaels compete in the Northwest Collegiate Classic at the Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, OR.
