(Long Beach, CA) - The USD Torero golf team, under the direction of 4th-year head coach Tim Mickelson, placed third out of 14 teams this week a the Del Walker Intercollegiate. The three-round event was held at the Virginia Country Club (par 71; 6633 yards) and USD shot a final day team score of 288 to finish at 861, just 5 shots off the winning score. Saint Mary's and Arkansas were declared co-champions after they both finished at 856 and both shot final day team scores of 287. The overall indivdual title came down to a playoff between USD's Joe Panzeri (68-72-72) and San Jose State's Aaron Conrad (72-71-69). Both shot a three-round total of 212, but Conrad shot a two-under 69 in Friday's final round to force the playoff. Conrad won the title with a birdie on the fifth playoff hole.
Panzeri, a junior who transferred from the University of Washington, played outstanding golf all three rounds. USD also got a strong showing from Darrin Hall who finished tied for 3rd at 213, just one stroke back of medalist honors. Hall's three-day totals were 72-71-70. Mike Barry moved up to a tie for 12th (215) with a final day score of 71 to go with his first day totals of 71-73. Rounding out USD's scoring was Dale Smith (T58 at 225; 72-74-79) and Brian Phan (T61 at 226; 73-78-75). Kenneth McCready, playing as an individual, carded a final day round of 72 and finished tied for 54th at 223 (75-76-72).
