Loveland, OH - Following 36-holes of play at the Xavier Invitational, the Saint Mary's men's golf team is in sole possession of second place, and two shots off the pace of Marquette. The Gaels posted rounds of 283-280 for a total of 563 (-13) at the par-72, 6,921-yard Oasis Golf Club. Josh Kelley is tied for the individual lead following rounds of 66 and 68 on Monday.
Saint Mary's opened the day with a 5-under par score of 283 following Kelley's round of 6-under par. The Gaels round of 283 was good for fourth place after 18 holes. The Gaels moved up two spots with a second round score of 8-under par 280 as three Gaels, Kelley, Robert McRae and Daniel Cone, shot rounds in red numbers. McRae matched Kelley's second round score of 4-under 68 and Cone shot 1-under 71 in the second round.
Kelley is currently tied for the lead in the individual Phillip Hendrickson of Eastern Kentucky with a 36-hole score of 134, 10-under par. Although the Gaels played consistent golf of the first day of the Xavier Invitational, the story of the day was the second round score of 266, 22-under par, by Marquette. The Golden Eagles, whom shot 8-over par 295 in the morning, were 29 shots better in the afternoon and moved up from a tie for 11th place, into a one-shot lead over the Gaels.
McRae opened the day with a even par round of 72 in the morning and following a 4-under par round of 68 in the afternoon, he is tied for 14th overall. Cone moved back to even par for the tournament after 36 holes after shooting rounds of 73 (+1) and 71 (-1).
Mike McRae shot rounds of 72 and 73 for a 36-hole score of 145 (+1) and Chadd Cocco posted rounds of 74 and 73 for a Monday score of 147 (+3). Richard Conlin, who is playing as an individual, shot rounds of 75 and 71 and his total of 146 (+2) is tied for 45th overall.
The Gaels will close out the Xavier Invitational on Tuesday morning with the third round at the Oasis Golf Club.
