Men's Golf Posts Third Place Finish at Northwest Collegiate Classic

Corvallis, OR - The Saint Mary's men's golf team posted a third place finish at the Northwest Collegiate Classic with a 54-hole score of 881 (+17) at the par-72, 7,040-yard Trysting Tree Golf Club. Saint Mary's posted rounds of 289-300-292 to finish third out of the 10-team field. Mike McRae shot the low score for the Gaels with a score of 217 (+1) and finished tied for eighth place overall.

Saint Mary's entered the third and final round of the Northwest Collegiate Classic tied for fourth place with two other schools and posted a third round score of 292 (+4) to move into sole possession of third, which was 14 shots off the pace of Oregon. The Gaels finished five shots behind San Francisco for second place.

After posting rounds of 69 and 76 on Monday, Saint Mary's captain Mike McRae was tied for 15th place heading into the final round. McRae shot an even par round of 72 on Tuesday to move up eight spots and post his first top-10 finish of the season.

Freshman Patrick Duncan posted the low round of the day for the Gaels, shooting a 2-under par 70 on Tuesday. The sub par round for Duncan was the third in six rounds for the first year player. Duncan finished the tournament in a tie for 15th place with a three-round total of 221 (+5) strokes, and posted his second top-20 finish in as many tournaments.

Matching Duncan's 54-hole score of 221 was fellow freshman Robert McRae. McRae, who finished 15th overall and posted his second top-20 finish of the season, shot a final round score of 4-over par 76. McRae posted rounds of 73 and 72 on Monday. After six rounds this season, McRae currently has a stroke average of 73.2, which is third best on the team.

Brett Mormann posted the third countable round for Saint Mary's on Tuesday with a 2-over 74 on Tuesday. Mormann opened the tournament with scores of 72 and 79 on Monday and finished tied for 29th place with a 54-hole total of 225 (+9).

Rounding out the Gaels' scoring was junior Josh Kelley who posted a 79 (+7) in the final round. Combined with his rounds of 75 and 78 on Monday, Kelley's three-round score of 232 (+16) was good for a 59th place finish in the individual field.

Saint Mary's will return to the links next week when they participate in the Alister Mackenzie Invitational hosted by Cal. The Alister Mackenzie Invitational will be played on Monday and Tuesday, October 9-10 at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, CA.
