Oct. 8, 2007

Fairfax, Calif. -- The Santa Clara men's golf team is in sixth place at the Alister Mackenzie tournament after one round of play today. The team is -9 behind strong performances by Jimmy Cacho (-6) and Jonathan Keane (-3). The Broncos are just four strokes behind the leader, Fresno State, and just one stroke behind host Cal.

Cacho had a rough start to his day, bogeying the first hole of the tournament. He then proceeded to birdie the next hole and six others to finish the round with a 65 which puts him tied for fourth place in the tournament, just four shots off the leader.

Keane was steady all through the first round, notching five birdies and two bogeys.

Also scoring for the Broncos were Scott Travers and Tyler Ichigawa who are both even par after the first round. Travers started his day out in spectacular fashion by getting an eagle on the first hole of the round. Ichigawa, a freshman playing in his second tournament started off very strong, going -3 in his first eight holes before bogeying three more to end the round at even par.

Senior Tim Lynch was even par going into the last two holes before a double-bogey and a bogey finish left him at +3 for the first round.

Second round play continues today and the final round will be played tomorrow morning.
