Men's Golf Wraps Up Alister Mackenzie Invite In 9th Place

Fairfax, CA - The Saint Mary's men's golf team posted a ninth place finish at the 2007 Alister Mackenzie Invitational with rounds of 272-283-285 for a 54-hole finish of 840 (12). In the 16-team, 80 player field, the Gaels were led by senior Mike McRae and sophomore Robert McRae, whom finished tied for fourth overall with a three-round scores of 205 (-8).

Saint Mary's entered the final round of the Alister Mackenzie Invitational tied for ninth place at 555 (-13) and dropped one shot on Tuesday with a final round score of 285 (+1), at the par-71, 6,686-yard Meadow Club. Saint Mary's got rounds of 69 from Mike McRae, 71 from Robert McRae, 72 from Daniel Cone, 73 from Chadd Cocco and 75 from Josh Kelley.

Mike McRae entered the final round tied for 15th overall after 36 holes, and moved up 11 spots with his 2-under par round on Tuesday. En route to his under par round, McRae shot 4-under on his front nine, before shooting 2-over par on the back nine. He collected five birdies and a bogey on the opening nine holes, then after a birdie on 12 got him to 5-under for the day, a double bogey on 15 and a bogey on 17 dropped the senior to 2-under for the day.

After shooing a career low score of 8-under par for 36 holes, Robert McRae closed out the tournament with a consistent round on Tuesday. En route to his even-par round 71, McRae made 16 pars, with one birdie and one bogey. McRae, started the day tied for fourth, and finished in the same position as he started.

Both Chadd Cocco and Daniel Cone finished the tournament tied for 45th place overall with scores of 215 (+2). After shooting even par over the first two rounds, Cocco posted a final round score of 2-over 73. Cocco managed just two birdies in Tuesday's round, while dropping a stroke on four holes.

Cone's round 1-over par saw the sophomore not make a par through is first six hole, but four birdies and two bogeys later, he was at 2-under through six. Cone made three pars to close the front, and with three more pars to start the back, was 2-under through 12 holes. He would close with bogeys on 13, 14 and 16 to drop to 1-over for the day.

Josh Kelley posted a 54-hole score of 222 (+9), following his round of 4-over par 75 on Tuesday. Kelley also got off to a hot start, making birdies on his first two holes. After pars on three and four, a bogey followed on five and he would get back to 2-under with a birdie on the par-5 15th hole. After a bogey on his eighth hole, Kelley made the turn at 1-under. Kelly struggled on the back nine with three bogeys and a double to shot 5-over par on the inward holes.

Saint Mary's will have a couple weeks off before playing in its next tournament. The Gaels will compete in the Del Walker Intercollegiate on Oct, 25-26. The tournament hosted by Long Beach State will be played at the Virginia Country Club.
