Lakeside, CA - After 36 holes of play at the Barona Collegiate Cup, the Saint Mary's golf team is currently in eighth place in the 18-team event hosted by San Diego State at the Barona Creek Golf Course. The Gaels posted rounds of 281 and 291 for a 36-hole total of 572. The Gaels are 17 strokes off the pace of Wichita State.
Saint Mary's opened the day with a score of 281 (-7) and was in fifth place after 18 holes. Leading the Gaels in the morning round was Brett Mormann, who shot a career-best round of 4-under par 68. Mike McRae and Robert McRae also shot under par in the opening round as they shot 70 (-2) and 71 (-1), respectively at the par 72, 7,323-yard golf course. Josh Kelley rounded out SMC's first-round scoring following an opening round even-par 72.
In the afternoon round, Saint Mary's shot a team score of 3-over par as Mike McRae was the only Gael to put a score under par. McRae finished the second round with a 2-under par 70 and will enter the third round tied for 11th place in the individual field. Mormann followed his career-best round with a 1-over par 73 for a total of 141 after 36 holes and tied for 13th place overall.
Robert McRae shot 74 in the second round and he was matched by Daniel Cone, who is playing in his first collegiate tournament this week. Cone opened the event with a round of 77 and he 36-hole total of 151 is currently 77th in the 99-player field. Kelley shot an 81 in the second round and paired with his 72 in the morning, he is tied for 85th place after 36 holes.
Saint Mary's will conclude the Barona Collegiate Cup on Tuesday with 18 holes of golf from Barona Creek Golf Course.
