Lakeside, CA - The Saint Mary's men's golf team finished the Barona Collegiate Cup with a ninth place finish in the 18-team event with rounds of 281-291-293 for the 54-hole total of 865. The Gaels posted a final round score of 293 (+5) and finished 25 shots behind first place UAB from the Barona Creek Golf Club on Tuesday.
Saint Mary's entered the final round in eighth place after Monday's opening two rounds and posted a score of 5-over par 293 on Tuesday. Leading the Gaels in the final round was junior captain Mike McRae who posted his third straight sub-par round with a 71. McRae opened the tournament with back-to-back rounds of 70 on Monday, and finished in a tie for 10th place with a total score of 211 (-5).
Josh Kelley rebounded from rounds of 72 and 81 on Monday to shot an even-par round of 72 on Tuesday. Kelley finished in a tie for 75th place with a final score of 225. Brett Mormann posted a top-20 finish as he concluded the tournament with a 2-over par score of 74 on Tuesday. Mormann posted rounds of 68 and 73 on Monday for a 54-hole total of 215 (+1).
Freshman Robert McRae had another solid performance as he finished in 49th place with rounds of 71, 74 and 76. McRae finished the tournament at 7-over par. Fellow freshman Daniel Cone, who was playing in his first tournament posted rounds of 77, 74 and 79 for a 89th place finish.
San Diego was the only other team in the tournament from the West Coast Conference. The Toreros posted a total score of 849 to finish 16 shots ahead of the Gaels.
Saint Mary's will close out its fall schedule when the Gaels travel to Hawaii for the Hawaii Fall Intercollegiate on November 6-8. The Hawaii Fall Intercollegiate will be played at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course on Oahu.
