As part of the buildup of the USF men's golf team into a national contender, the Dons will host the first ever USF Triumph at Pauma Valley, a 15-team intercollegiate event at the Pauma Valley Country Club in Southern California on March 12th and 13th, 2007.
The 15 team event which features teams from the around the country including Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Hartford and Campbell and some of the best of the West including Air Force, UC Santa Barbara, Long Beach State, Weber State, Cal Poly, CS Monterey Bay and USF's West Coast Conference foes San Diego, Santa Clara, Loyola Marymount, Saint Mary's, and host San Francisco.
Teams will play 36 holes on Monday and complete the tournament with 18 on Tuesday.
It will be the first intercollegiate event held at the prestigious country club, a Robert Trent Jones, Sr. signature golf course that is limited to just over 200 members. Set at the foot of Palomar Mountain, it's as scenic as it is challenging. Considered by many to be one of the finest layouts in Southern California, Pauma Valley was for many years listed in Golf Digest's Top 50 and was in the 1980's, the home of televised events featuring Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Mike Souchak.
"As we take our program to a higher and higher level, we wanted to host a fall event and a spring event," said head golf coach Dr. Gary Nelson. "We are going to announce our fall event soon. The USF Triumph at Pauma Valley is an ideal spring tournament, played in a place for teams from the east to play a great course in excellent weather.
"This will be a great event for our team to play in, as well. It's a top level course that will help prepare us as we seek to qualify for the NCAA tournament field. It will also help establish the USF men's golf team as a player in recruiting Blue Chip players from Southern California."
The practice round will be a college-am, with Pauma Valley members playing alongside collegiate players.
Results from the tournament will be available live on the internet at www.USFDons.com and posted at the end of each day's competition.
