Strong Finish Places Men's Golf 10th At Braveheart Classic

March 10, 2006

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The University of Portland Men's Golf Team took a big step in the right direction Tuesday, shooting its best round and 54-hole team tournament score in finishing 10th among a field of 20 teams at the Braveheart Classic. The Pilots fired an 897, including a second-round 292 which was the second lowest round of the day and fourth lowest of the tournament, at the par-72, 6,896-yard Oak Valley Golf Club.

Redshirt junior Jake Easterly led the Pilots with a 221 (+5), including a Portland season's best 69 in the final round. His 69 was one of only four individual sub-70 rounds among the 112-player field.

Easterly tied for 17th individually, the top finish for any Pilot golfer this season. Sophomore Joel Johnson made his return to the lineup in good fashion, placing 26th at 223 (+7) with all three rounds in the 70s. Senior Aaron Anderson carded a 229, junior John Marty had a 230 and sophomore Matt Jacobsen went for 238, but scored in both the first and second rounds with a 77 and 74, respectively.

Portland's second round 292 was the best round of the year for the Pilots. Head Coach Bill Winter and Portland finished ahead of 10 schools, including five of which had beaten the Pilots in tournaments previously this year - Boise State, CS Northridge, Utah State, Pacific and Gonzaga. Portland finished one stroke back of Weber State, a team which bettered UP by 26 strokes back at the Bronco Fall Invitational in November. The 897 also was 10 strokes better than Portland's previous best 54-hole team finish this year.

UCLA ran away with the team title, finishing at 1-over-par 865. Cal Poly and Santa Clara finished tied for second at 884. UCLA's Chris Heintz claimed medalist honors with a 209, five strokes better than second place.

The Pilots continue their spring schedule at the Oregon Duck Invitational on March 27-28 at Shadow Hills Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
