San Francisco, CA - Saint Mary's senior golfer Chadd Cocco captured the prestigious San Francisco City Golf Championship on Sunday afternoon by defeating the number one seeded Reid Scarff 2 and 1 in the 36-hole championship at Harding Park Golf Course in San Francisco.
Cocco advanced to the finals after making 10 birdies in 29 holes to defeat Kevin Smith, a Mitty High senior, 8 and 7 in a 36-hole match play on Saturday. A 300-yard-plus guy off the tee, Cocco is a former Oregon Amateur champion who has qualified for match play at both the U.S. Amateur and British Amateur.
Cocco, who is redshirting this season at Saint Mary's and playing in local amateur tournament, entered the round of 64 as the six-seed after posting a two-round score of 140. Cocco cruised through his early match play rounds, defeating Nick Rechedy of San Francisco, 7 and 6 and then he defeated Arvo Voip of Magalia 4 and three.
The following weekend, Cocco defeated the #43 seed, Jake Bieber of Alamo 4 and three to advance to the semifinals. In his quarterfinal match, Cocco went extra holes against the number-three seeded Andrew Biggadike, and won the match in 20 holes to advance to his semifinal match against Smith.
